Nathan Update #11

More good news today. With Nathan's first echocardiogram it looked like he had a small ASD (hole in his heart - not uncommon in babies with Down Syndrome). This was not a big concern, 1) since it was so small and they often close on their own, and 2) since the hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was so advanced and life threatening. So far they have not been able to find it on the echo from yesterday. They are thinking that it has closed on it's own, or that it was never really there, but it just looked like it because of muscle changes due to the extreme nature of the cardiomyopathy. In any event, his cardiologist was very happy this morning and is quietly talking about "kicking us out" (were there ever better words???) within the next few days.
.
We're still working on the feeding. They call it his feeding issue. Ha! But he is doing a little bit better everyday - eating more and eating faster. I think his little body is getting more used to the mixture of meds and he's acting more like himself - less sleepy, more alert & wiggly. :) There was talk of putting in a g-button as a more permanent feeding option, but I'm only for that as a last resort. I think it's an extreme option for Nathan anyway - he's doing measurably better everyday (and it's all about measuring at the hospital, isn't it?). Luckily, I'm not the only one here who thinks it won't be necessary. :)
.
So, for now we're hanging out here. Nathan is eating and napping. I am getting sick of HGTV. Pretty boring. But boring is good when you're in the hospital! Boring means you get to go home soon.
